Concha Barrios, collection of an antiquarian
Setdart Auctions is pleased to present the private collection of Concha Barrios that will be put up for auction on April 19, 2022.
Concha Barrios began her career in the art world with a gallery on Claudio Coello street in Madrid, in 1977, specializing in ancient and 19th-century painting, and in 1994 she opened a gallery in Naples with her husband Claudio Brandi, a Neapolitan antique dealer. specialist in decorative arts.
The gallery has been present at some of the most important fairs both nationally and internationally, such as TEFAF (Maastricht), TEFAF (Basel), the Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato (Milan), the Mostra Internazionale dell’Antiquariato (Florence) , the Salon du Collectionneur (Paris), the IFAE (Palm Beach, Miami) or FERIARTE (Madrid).
Concha began her collection at a very young age, turning to 19th-century painting, a genre that was not very popular in Spain at the time.. This collecting took him to America where the nineteenth-century painting market was more fashionable, due to the movement of works from Spain to Latin America at the end of the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century.
These adventures were nothing more than the beginning of continuous travels around the world in an uninterrupted search for exotic, special or particular pieces that would make a difference. In recent years he has dedicated himself to collecting pieces more for his personal taste, not so common in Spain: oriental, Hispanic-Philippine and Hispanic-American pieces are some of the treasures that make up his collection.
All of this comes together in a woman who managed to carve out a niche for herself in Spanish antiques in an environment that was not entirely favorable, such as the 1970s in Spain, in a world dominated by men, without forgetting her role as mother of a family. Perseverance and improvement have made Concha one of the most respected antique dealers in Spain.
